CNY Family Trip to Bandung 2018

Back dated: 新年快乐! (Happy New Year!) This year family trip to Bandung for Chinese New Year.

Our family chose to stay at Best Western Premier La Grande Hotel, which was conveniently located between two malls: Bandung Indah Plaza and Istana BEC. Nice place for light shopping and mainly was to visit the supermarket to stock up on Indo Mee supplies!

Just going to run through some of the more memorable experiences. The itinerary did include a walking tour of Bandung town as well, which tbh can be skipped if you have limited time.

Tahu Susu Lembang:

Visited this stop over to have a tasted of what Tripadvisor mention to be “The Best Tofu in Bandung”, or better known as Tahu Tauhid, which is deep-fried tofu freshly made at the store. It was so frangrant and memorable. Besides tofu, they also sell soya milk, souvenir crackers, etc. It's a good-short-stop for those who passed Lembang.

Tangkuban Perahu:

Based on Indonesia Tourism Board website:
Tangkuban perahu is an active volcano, situated 30 km north of the city of Bandung in the direction of Lembang. It is the only crater in Indonesia that you can drive up to its very rim. Mount Tangkuban Perahu has a distinctive shape, and looks like an “overturned boat”. Here you will be greeted by sulfur fumes which the crater continues to emit although the volcano is not active.

As it was the chinese new year peak period, the roads were jammed very severely. Hence, to compensate, we had to depart from our hotel almost 2 hours earlier to make up for lost time. Travelling around Bandung in a big tour bus was out of the question due to the jam and size of the road, hence we were mostly chartered around in a mini tour bus. The weather was significantly cooler up on the highlands compared to ground level.

Kawah Putih:

The other famous crater, Kawah Putih is near a little town called Ciwidey. Its name literally means White Crater, which radiates a turquoise hue due to the high concentration of sulfur.

“The lake is said to have been first documented in 1837 by Dr Franz Wilhelm Junghuhn, a German botanist,” Indonesia’s official tourism site narrates. “At the time, there were various local stories about the history of the area. Birds were said to avoid flying near the region and some were even found dead after flying above the lake…. These stories prompted Dr Junghuhn to investigate, and so discovered Kawah Putih. He concluded that the birds flying over the Crater Lake died due to its high concentration of sulfur.” https://www.thepoortraveler.net/2015/05/kawah-putih-ciwidey-bandung-west-java-indonesia/

It was definitely a sight to behold. From afar, it looks like a milk pond with a distinct rotten egg smell. Visitors were advised not to remain at the attraction for more than 10 minutes at a time due to the high concentration of sulfur. However, to be honest, the sulfur smell experienced at NZ was way stronger, hence, we didnt feel it was a cause for alarm.

Really thankful that the sun came up just in time when we arrived. The tour guide mentioned that the colour of the pond varies significantly with the sunlight intensity at the point of visit. Her previous group was not so lucky, the gloomy monsoon weather meant the pond was in a grey-ish tone instead.

The only down side was the huge crowd of the CNY holidays, we could barely take a photo without bumping into another tourist in the backdrop.

Strawberry picking:

One of the recommended itinerary for Bandung was strawberry picking. Along the way, we saw many strawberry farms. Had a fun time being farmers with the cousins!

Family!
