APPALLED week one of school
BAD. Yes, putting it simply, it's only the first week of school and we are already extremely frustrated with Korea University's school system. Korea University is not ready to welcome international exchange students in huge volumes, definitely too ambitious...
The only thing good about the school is the exterior of the campus buildings.
1. Modules do not have preclusions. Despite the class being over flowingly full, students that took modules that overlapped greatly with that particular modules are 'advised' to choose another module. JUST TELL THEM TO GET OUT, SERIOUSLY… Had to take screening test on second lecture to filter out the 'stupid kids'.
2. Every introductory lecture was basically about convincing people to drop the class/ get out because its too full. Like, the heck, is the registration system useless? So many students and not enough modules offered to cater for everyone? If you do not have the capacity, don't be so ambitious of welcoming so many exchange students! Simple as that!
2. Koreans taking English modules can speak up in class in Korean, and the lecturer don't bother translating for the rest who do not understand Korean. Then what's with the 100% English policy?
3. The professors and the school administration provide opposing information. According to the international one-stop service centre in KU:
"International students can join a class if they ask the professor to give permission on the ‘override permission slip’ (refer to page 14) and submit it to the International One-Stop Service Center even if the class is shown as full online."
This information was obtained from the course registration guide. However, apparently the professors do not wish to sign this permission slip because the class was bigger than what they preferred. This was despite there being empty seats in the room!

One of my friend got the signatures but was rejected by the department.
4. Printing systems in school is equally expensive as outside of school, and no English options on computer. Printing was a mess
5. Lecturers did not read textbook before using it as readings. Totally unprepared syllabus.
6. Biased against exchange students, thinking that Korea University students have priority in getting modules. You see all the exchange students gathering helplessly after being rejected module after module. One American girl joked 'At this rate, let's just quit college'. HELLO, we need to graduate as well??
7. Buddy system sucks because they all flock and shower attention to the Caucasians. Campus tour was just bringing us to the main building for photo taking instead of telling us where the cafeteria was, printing locations.
8. And the school wifi sucks! Wonder have we are supposed to do projects in future...
Us Singaporeans from NUS are totally appalled by the school's inefficiencies and attitude of professors. Thus, explaining its world rankings of 145.
ANNOYED THROUGH AND THROUGH.
Wow! I have to agree with you.... too ambitious!! You have definitely opened my eyes to their higher learning system as it relates to the exchange students. I love reading your experiences. Great blog!!!!
